| | Legend (W/Book) - Johnny Cash
There are several Cash boxes available, but The Legend--spanning the years 1955-2002 but concentrating on his long tenure at Columbia and, to a lesser degree, his beginnings at Sun--probably belongs at the top of the list. Cash's greatest strengths are dramatized on these four, thematically programmed discs: Win, Place and Show: The Hits; Old Favorites and New; The Great American Songbook (mostly traditional songs); and Family and Friends (collaborations). For starters, consider the staggering depth and breadth of his repertoire (perhaps matched only by those of Bob Dylan and Ray Charles), embracing ancient folk tunes ("Streets of Laredo"), teen pop ("Ballad of a Teenage Queen"), mature contemporary rock ("Highway Patrolman"), gospel ("Were You There When They Crucified My Lord"), topical fare ("Ballad of Ira Hayes"), country standards ("Time Changes Everything"), novelties ("One Piece at a Time"), and more. Then there's the way his spare, spacious sound opens up to take in horns ("Ring of Fire"), strings ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"), anything. The Legend includes seven previously unissued sides, most prominently "It Takes One to Know Me," a stirring salute to his wife June. --John Morthland

| | | | Johnny's my hero Thursday, April 22, 2010I got this set of CDs and history for Christmas.
When I got around to playing them, I found out that Johnny sang almost all the songs my buddy and I sang for our own pleasure fifty years ago, besides a whole lot of wonderful songs that have been written since then. This set has 104 songs.
I sent a copy to my old buddy and he's as entranced as I am.
Then I read a book or two and found out that Johnny was a fearless defender of the poor and the troubled. When Nixon asked Johnny to sing two of Nixon's favorites at the White House, Johnny instead sang three songs about war, about mistreatment of the troubled, and about truth.
Johnny also gave a benefit concert for Leonard Peltier. Peltier was convicted by the FBI, who used seriously tainted evidence, according to Amnesty International. Willy Nelson also gave a benefit concert for Peltier, and the FBI harassed Willy for years. The FBI didn't have the balls to harass Johnny, because Johnny was tougher than they are.
Johnny's my hero, and you'll love his music. Cash $ Saturday, January 30, 2010Cash is one of the greatest musicians of all time. This is a strong compilation of his best work. I would recommend this to any fan of Johnny Cash. a must for Cash fans Monday, October 12, 2009This is a good collection with a mix of some of the more popular Cash songs and a lot of lesser know ones. JOHNNY CASH FEST OF MUSIC! Monday, August 03, 2009I'm a big Johnny Cash fan, but only possessed one CD. So I lashed out and bought this super 4 cd edition. What a great buy! It's Johnny Cash overload - but I love it! Many of his songs, from different eras, lots of oldies and well known favourites - and quite a few new, unheard songs. But all fabulous and most enjoyable! My all-time favourite is Ghost Riders in the sky. For some reason when I listen to this song, and visualise it, I get goosebumps - every time. I have no idea why! This set also contains an interesting booklet inside on Johnny Cash. This is a great addition to any CD Collection! Johnny Cash fans especially, will love it. He is a legend, indeed. Great Collection, but poor quality Friday, July 31, 2009The collection of songs is great - it's perfect for me. I like Johnny Cash, but I'm not a die-hard fan with a need for his whole collection. The number of songs and the songs chosen are perfect, and I do like the way the discs are arranged by category. The only complaint I have, and it's a big one, is the quality. It sounded so bad I turned it off on my first listen. Very tinny with some popping and crackling. The bass is lost and when you tweak on the EQ, it distorts even worse. I have had cassettes with better quality. I think it sounds fine on a low quality CD player that does not have a lot of range in sound to begin with, but when played on something a little more high end with a lot of range like a 10 speaker Bose car stereo, the poor quality is really accentuated making it painful to listen to. | | | | |
