For Simple use, its perfect Tuesday, August 24, 2010I bought this product just for a simple nose hair trim. It worked brilliantly, as I wasn't putting it through anything intense. Battery life so far has been great. Its water resistance which is a nice touch. The light on the device is rather pointless. If it could be disabled I'm sure it would help extend battery life.
If you're looking for a simple trim, something to make those small undesirable hairs go away, this is the product for you. Its cheap and it works well.

the actual item does it's job quite nicely. i would rate it a 4 on it's own. it feels good in the hand, cuts easily and quickly plus the light is actually useful. the nasty stench when one st opens the battery compartment is [i suppose] outgassing from something in the assembly. i went away after i left it open for a few hours. [*grin*]
the reason i rated this item at ONE is cuz the blister pack had NO indication of how to open it. it was sealed TIGHTLY and the plastic was quite brittle. i finally took a knife and the package out in the yard and sliced it open. the plastic shattered when the cut neared one edge and i was struck by many bits of sharp plastic. one bounced off of my glasses. thankfully, i didn't lose my eye cuz the glasses stopped the missile.
i can't recommend anyone buying this item while the blister pack remains so remarkably dangerous to open.
i suppose they wanted to mutilate any shoplifters ... but they forgot to account for actual buyers. [*sigh ...*]

An excellent nose/ear trimmer Monday, August 16, 2010(this review is by Karen's husband)
I've been using the Panasonic ER421KC for over 3 years now an I can say with confidence that this is an excellent device for doing the job it was designed for. That is to say it clips/trims nose and ear hairs efficiently and virtually painlessly.
The lighted feature is an excellent idea and does the job of helping you locate the nose hairs you may have missed. Just keep in mind that the light is NOT intended to help you guide the device while it's in your nostril and trimming, but instead is intended to enable you to check your work, and locate any stubborn/missed hairs for another pass.
The ability to rinse the unit under the faucet is very convenient and for further cleaning the tip breaks down super quick and easy to aid in rinsing out clipped hair. The ER421KC is also very reliable, it always runs (as long as the battery isn't drained of course) and has never failed me, with the exception of the below cases, which were my fault.
The only reason I didn't give this unit 5 stars is due to a slight lack of durability of the metal tip. Twice now, I've dropped one of these units, and both times the metal trimming tip was bent so slightly that it was imperceptible to the naked eye. But when I turned the unit on, the blades were making a more pronounced contact with the inside of the metal tip and while it still trimmed hair, it had a pronounced tendency to tug/pull rather than cut cleanly. The contact of the blade on the inside of the metal tip also likely would have dramatically dulled the blades in a short amount of time so replacement of the unit was a must.
I knocked one off the counter (a fall of about 2 1/2 feet) and it clattered around on the floor, another I knocked out of the medicine cabinet and it bounced around in the sink (a fall of about 1 1/2 feet) and both times the unit started right up and worked but the tip was irreversibly bent and never trimmed half as well as before the unit was dropped.
Please note that dropping the unit didn't break it so that it no longer operated, but instead caused it to not operate as well as prior to the accident.
The first unit I owned worked flawlessly for about 10 months before I damaged it by dropping. The second unit worked flawlessly for a little over 2 years before I also damaged it by dropping. Neither unit failed on it's own. Chalk it up to user error and perhaps a slight lack of durability of the metal tip. (I mean, come on... one only fell about a foot and a half but still the tip took damage) I have a strong feeling that pretty much any of the brands and models available that use this tip/cutting design are prone to tip damage from being dropped.
Bottom Line: The Panasonic ER421KC Nose and Ear Hair Trimmer is an excellent, reliable device for trimming one's nose and ear hairs. Just take care not to drop it! Take care of it, and it will take care of you.
